AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - In Republican political circles and social media, a debate is raging on what qualifies as true conservatism.
Voters hear candidates claim they are the true conservative in a race, while they paint their competitors as moderates. Political action committees and activists create elaborate score cards to quantify a lawmaker's conservative voting record.
Yet, there appears to be growing disagreement on what being conservative means. The Texas Conservative Roundtable recently formed to provide a business-oriented viewpoint to promote fiscally-responsible economic growth. But Empower Texans has denounced the group as trying to protect moderate incumbents.
The two groups frequently give candidates different ratings on their conservative voting record.
The roundtable though says it is merely looking for fiscally responsible solutions to problems that will hurt Texas businesses if they are not solved.
