AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A security guard at a Central Texas motel has been charged with murder in a fatal shooting during an altercation.
Travis County jail records show 43-year-old Robert Earl Goins II was being held Tuesday on $300,000 bond. Jail records do not list an attorney for Goins, who was booked Monday afternoon in the slaying of 27-year-old Jonathan Cook.
Austin police say Goins told them that he and Cook argued on Friday night before the guard opened fire. Cook was found dead in a vehicle that crashed minutes later on Interstate 35.
Sgt. Jerry Bauzon says police are trying to determine what prompted the dispute involving Cook, who was not a registered guest at the Budget Lodge.
Investigators are also trying to determine whether Goins was authorized to carry a gun.
