FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - A North Texas man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend's mother in an argument as he tried to visit his two children.
Prosecutors in Fort Worth say 24-year-old Luis Alfredo Perez received the maximum penalty. Perez in October pleaded guilty to murder in the 2011 shooting of Maria Ramirez and was sentenced Tuesday by a judge.
The ex-girlfriend had a protective order and Perez was barred from the Arlington home she shared with their two children and her mother. Investigators say Perez contacted his ex-girlfriend but she refused to allow a visit because he previously was intoxicated when he stopped to pick up the youngsters.
Investigators say Perez showed up and Ramirez was shot when she went outside to speak to him.
