COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) - Texas A&M University says enrollment has hit a record high of nearly 59,000 students, ranking it first in the state.
The university says in a statement Thursday part of the increase is due to the acquisition of a Fort Worth-based law school and the return of a medical program. It says that as of Sept. 20 the university had 58,809 students. It says the numbers are not expected to change.
Nearly 54,000 students are at the school's main campus in College Station. The university says there are more than 25,000 women enrolled at the school, which until 50 years ago was an all-male institution.
The enrollment figures come on the heels of a recent announcement that Texas A&M had raised a record $740 million in donations the past year.
