MIDLAND, Texas (AP) - Part of a West Texas elementary school had to be evacuated after a child carried some type of apparent explosive device to school.

Officials with the Midland Independent School District say nobody was hurt Monday morning in the incident at Milam Elementary School.

Authorities believe the item was fireworks or an oilfield device. Superintendent Ryder Warren says the device was located outside the front door. Students and staff in nearby classrooms were evacuated as a precaution.

Midland police safely removed the device. Further information about the item wasn't immediately released. School officials did not release the name of the child.

Warren says students would be given a note to take home Monday afternoon about the incident and to remind parents to check what children put in their backpacks.
