AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Two South Texas counties have among the highest rates of people without health insurance in the nation according to new census data.
The statistical analysis of the American Community Survey data made available Thursday shows that Hidalgo County has the highest rate among urban counties and Maverick County has the highest rate among counties with medium-sized populations.
The state of Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation at 25 percent. Massachusetts has the lowest uninsured rate in the nation at 4.9 percent.
Almost 39 percent of Hidalgo County residents don't have health coverage. In Maverick, the uninsured rate is 35 percent.
The Census bureau generated the estimates by comparing its data with information from other federal agencies. The latest data available is from 2011.
