Texas' ongoing drought keeping lake levels down

WHITE RIVER LAKE, Texas (AP) - Texans endured a historic drought in 2011 and a look at current lake levels across the state shows a lingering, dry remnant.

The 109 lakes that supply the majority of the state's water were 64 percent full Wednesday, the lowest level for this time of year since 1990.

Too little rain has fallen since 2011, Texas' driest year ever, to refill the lakes.

Levels are 10 percent lower than last July and 20 percent below normal for this time of year.

Evaporation this summer could lead to the largest gap ever between the amount of water actually in lakes and their total capacity. State officials say the limited rainfall means water suppliers should extend watering restrictions for months.

Thirteen small suppliers could be out of water in 45 days.
