WACO, Texas (AP) - A state district judge in Waco is helping a 13-year-old sexual abuse victim gain an immigrant visa after the local district attorney refused.
The Waco Tribune-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/SWjUbq ) that the girl's attorney approached Judge Ralph Strother as a last resort. The girl and her mother are seeking U-Visas, which are granted to immigrants who are victims of crimes.
The girl was brought here by her mother 12 years ago. Both are illegal immigrants. But after the girl was abused by her mother's boyfriend, her mother called authoriites. The boyfriend pleaded guilty and got 35 years in prison.
Afterward, McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna refused to help with U-Visas, saying he didn't want them given as "rewards."
But Strother says signing visa paperwork was "the right thing to do."
