KATY, Texas (AP) - Authorities in suburban Houston say a man has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound hours after gunning down his estranged wife as she arrived for work at a high school.
Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. John Sampa says the woman, a cafeteria worker, was fatally shot about 6 a.m. Friday as she arrived at Tompkins High School in Katy. Witnesses said they saw an armed man flee in a white pickup. A state trooper found that pickup just west of Katy at a home in Brookshire.
Following a standoff that lasted about 3 ½ hours, a Waller County sheriff's tactical team went into the home about 10:30 a.m. and found the 53-year-old suspect dead in a front bedroom. Sampa says a .22-caliber rifle was recovered.
