HOBART, Okla. (AP) - The City Council in Hobart has agreed to allow licensed drivers to drive golf carts on city streets.

The ordinance is intended to help residents deal with rising gas prices and takes effect August 31st.

Retiree Kent Preston first presented the idea to City Manager Wilt Brown after seeing a friend suffer with an eye disease.

Then gas prices reached near $4 a gallon and Preston says it seems to make even more sense.

Permits are expected to cost $10 per driver. Council members also are expected to require seat belts, limit usage to daytime hours and ban any carts from highways.
