OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A state Corrections Department official says Oklahoma prisons don't have the space or manpower to treat the number of sex offenders who are incarcerated.

Department spokesman Jerry Massie says Oklahoma only has space for 55 inmates in its treatment program for sex offenders. More than 3,000 sex offenders are in the state's prisons.

Those numbers came to light last week when a 20-year-old offender unsuccessfully asked an Oklahoma County judge to reduce a 15-year prison sentence for rape.

Gilbert Sisson told the judge that the Corrections Department needed to make sure sex offenders aren't released without receiving treatment to control their urges.

Massie says the department gives priority to enter the program to inmates who are closest to finishing their terms when slots open.
