LAWTON, OK. (AP) - Work will begin this week in a Lawton city park on a memorial to honor children who have died.
The Lawton Constitution reports the project is planned by the local chapter of The Compassionate Friends, a support group for parents who have lost children. Project manager Doug Weber says ground work will begin soon at Elmer Thomas Park.
The group hopes to dedicate the memorial in May.
The Compassionate Friends group says it hopes the memorial is a comforting place for parents to come remember children of any age. The memorial will feature a statue of two children playing leapfrog.
Members have been working for three years to raise money for the project. The group plans to sell memorial bricks that will be engraved with the names of children.
