Fires are devastating and sometimes deadly, and in many cases the cause of a fire can be prevented. Here's today’s safe family report with Ryan Loyd.

Sherman Fire Chief Jeff Jones is demonstrating some proper methods to follow while cooking in the kitchen. Kitchen fires are often the cause of major fires.

"Typically someone cooks, leaves it unattended, and it catches fire," Sherman Fire Chief Jeff Jones says.

With our busy lives and with a lot of distractions at home, making dinner can be very dangerous. The TV is on, the kids are running around, and it's easy to forget that pan on the stove.

"The fire at the Southgate Apartments was unattended," Chief Jones says, referencing a fire in Sherman late last month.

There are several types of fires relating to cooking and the kitchen including dry cooking fires, grease fires, and oven fires.

The most common fire is a dry cooking fire, where the moisture boils out of the pan and you're left with food that begins smoking.

The first thing to do during any fire is get out and call 911, and remember, never put water on a grease fire. Instead, turn off the heat and cover pan with lid.

Oven fires are usually contained within the oven and don't get out of control, but any fire is serious business. So stay on task in the kitchen and watch what you're doing.
