We've talked before about the upcoming summer season and getting your child involved in programs or activities to keep them occupied. Police urge before you enroll your kids in a program to make sure you check it out first.

With the kids headed out of the classroom and into a summer full of opportunities, police say it's a good idea to check with the programs they'll be attending.

"Find out about the program. Do research and put your kids in a safe environment," Sherman police Sgt. Bruce Dawsey says.

Many times, Sgt. Dawsey says, parents will trust that the summer programs or activities are automatically safe.

"Most kids are harmed by people they know. No one should ask them to keep a secret or touch them where a bathing suit would cover."

Sgt. Dawsey says checking out the situation should not be a road-block for your children getting involved this summer. After all, he says it is a great way for kids to learn while still having fun and to make new friends.

Just be sure to know where your children are going.
