The American Academy of Pediatrics is urging parents to take a close look at their children's car seats. It's critically important the children be fitted for the proper car seat according to their age and weight.

The different age groups consist of: infants, toddlers/pre-schoolers, school-aged children, and older children.

The AAP recommends that, for infants especially, the car seat is "rear facing" until they are at least one year of age and are at least 20 pounds.

The right seat is important, as well as how it's installed. Make sure that you follow the directions, and if you have any questions or need help installing the car seat, just follow the website link below or call the numbers listed.

If you need installation help

If you have questions or need help installing your car safety seat, find a certified CPS Technician. A list of certified CPS Technicians is available by state or ZIP code on the NHTSA Web site at www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/injury/childps/contacts. A list of inspection stations—where you can go to learn how to correctly install a car safety seat—is available in English and Spanish at www.seatcheck.org or toll-free at 866/SEATCHECK (866/732-8243). You can also get this information by calling the toll-free NHTSA Auto Safety Hotline at 888/DASH-2-DOT (888/327-4236) from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm ET, Monday through Friday.

If you would like further information, please check out the Child Passenger Safety section of the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office Website at: www.ohso.ok.gov (and although we address the "pets" topic, it is a good one).

I always use infant and toddler seats. The rule is simply, we don't move the car without being locked in. If the seat doesn't hold you tight in the car, it is not hooked up right or is not the right seat for your child or car.

And could you get the weight of a toddler age 6 or so that requires booster seat or will a regular car seat work at that age? You never know as they change it yearly!

Pets may not be children; but they're our "kids" too. They should also be in their crates and buckled in! This is for the pet's safety AS WELL AS YOURS!

I agree with Crystal. Some of those booster seats just don't seem like they would hold a child in if a crash occurred.
