It's the season of home repair, and with that may come a new paint job to give your home or office a refreshed feel. In our Safe Family report, Ryan Loyd reports of how applying the coat of color takes thought and preparation to keep you out of harm’s way.

Schools like Sherman’s Washington Elementary are set to open in the fall, but before that, crews are busy preparing the halls and classrooms for the first day including new paint.

Henry Marroquin and his staff at Henry's Painting are working on the project. They are doing the job right, with plenty of tools to allow them to stay safe like this dust mask with exhalation valve.

"It can cause brain damage," Marroquin says.

But there are those supplies that you need to be extra careful with. Drop cloths protect against spills and splatters, but be careful not to slip on them. Paint thinners and other liquids can also be very harmful.

You should always work in a well-ventilated area, wear safety masks, goggles, and gloves, and when using a ladder, always make sure it's sturdy.

Following some tips will have your home in tip-top shape so you can begin the next home project.
