DENISON, Tex. -- Good news arrived this week for the Denison Independent School District and their TAKS Test scores. Officials say students scored higher than their peers in 26 of the 27 testing areas, a drastic improvement from last year.

The largest difference was a middle school score that was 20 points above the average. Students did not exceed the state average in sixth grade math, but officials say they are working over the summer to develop the best strategies for next year.

"We’re pleased, but it's like always. The next year you've got to look and see where you can actually bring them up even more," Denison ISD superintendent Dr. Henry Scott said Wednesday.

School district staff work with students in groups and one-on-one as needed to help every child perform their best.

I am very proud of the Denison students. Although, I do not agree that the staff worked with students on a one-on-one basis to help EVERY child perform their best. They did if the student QUALIFIED for help. That means that if there is a particular area that your child needs help in, when they fail the course THEN they will help them. My child struggled with math and when I asked her teacher if she could come in for some tutoring I was told she did not qualify. It was obvious that she was struggling since her grades on daily work were in the 40-50 range. I had to go out and seek a tutor on my own. What happened to the days of if a child needs help then help them. No child left behind.... if they qualify. Lucky for me I have friends who are teachers not in Denison who helped her and she did very well on the TAKS. Commended performance. But it is all in Thanks to my friends not the school district staff.
