ARDMORE, Okla. -- Students of Ardmore city schools will be paying more to eat meals at school next year.

Thursday night, the school board unanimously approved a 20 cent hike for lunches and a 10 cent increase for breakfasts.

That will put the cost of a lunch at $1.80 for the younger children. Sixth through 12th graders will have to pay $2.00.

And they are not the only ones who will have to pay more. It will cost you $3.00 if you want to go and have lunch with your child. That's a 25 cent increase.

Administrators say food has gotten so expensive, the increase still doesn't cover the full cost of serving a hot meal.

"Our cost of meal preparation has gone up 26 cents per meal... we proposed raising lunch prices 20 cents per meal for students," said Dr. Ruth Ann Carr, Ardmore superintendent.

This is the first price increase in five years.

We have more of the committee’s recommendations from Robin Beal’s story posted Wednesday.

I don't think that these prices are bad. School lunches are much better now than they used to be and the variety allows the kids to actually get something that they like for lunch. I don't see why parents would gripe. Everything is going up, it is just part of life. Just be glad that our kids are getting a healthy lunch at school instead of the junk that so many parents pack in a lunchbox.

The school would save some money if they would feed the elementary kids a single type of lunch instead of serving 2 different lunches. Students should only have choices at the middle and high school level.

I guess parents can't complain too much, since their own groceries are going up as well (they ought to understand that prices are going up for EVERYONE, even schools). If they don't like it, maybe they should cut out all the sodas and chips and "fruit" snacks they buy for their kids... then they'd be better able to afford the price increases!
