ARDMORE, Okla. -- When your kids get to be school-aged, it's not unusual to experience some growing pains, but for one local school system those growing pains are being felt like never before. Worries over increased enrollment at Ardmore city schools, particularly among younger students have been a major concern for school officials and parents. The school board took action Tuesday night.

The board addressed anticipated overcrowding at one school in particular, Jefferson Elementary. They needed to reduce the number of students by about fifty at that campus because educators say, there simply was not going to be enough room.

The solution was to redraw the boundaries.

This is what the old map looked like.

The new zones are very similar but with one obvious difference in a chunk in the Sam Noble Parkway/Refinery Road area, no longer pink. That means kids who live in those neighborhoods will now be going to Charles Evans Elementary.

"Jefferson was projected to have more students than they had a capacity to serve. As we looked at the upcoming first graders and the outgoing fifth graders, it was going to create a distinct problem just in having enough room for the children at Jefferson," Ardmore superintendent Dr. Ruth Ann Carr says.

It has yet to be determined exactly how many students each campus will have this year. Administrators say that will depend on who moves into or out of the affected neighborhoods in the weeks between now and the start of school.

I am glad that they are trying to find a place for the children to go. But they really need to crack down on proof of residence. Charles Evan may have a new building but it is still very crowded for the amount of children per teacher that they do have.
