SHERMAN, Tex. -- Thousands of students will soon fill the hallways of Sherman schools, but with all the recent construction, will those schools be ready for them? School administrators say renovations should be finished by the start of the school year, and all buildings safe for class.

There are many finishing touches that need to be completed. Twelve of the fourteen Sherman campuses are getting makeovers, but administrators say while it seems like a daunting task now the buildings will be ready on August 25.

Thanks to the $77 million provided by the September 2005 bond election, students in Sherman have become used to the sounds of remodeling. But this year those sounds will be replaced with the sound of music in Sherman High School, thanks to newly expanded band and orchestra rooms.

Superintendent Dr. Al Hambrick says he is excited for everything to be ready.

"It’s a great feeling on our part, and we're just excited that we'll be able to add these new facilities for our students, our staff, and our community."

Some of the other things Hambrick is looking forward to are new security vestibules. Anyone other than students or staff will have to stop and see a receptionist before being allowed through locked doors into any SISD building.

Hambrick also says there will be a lot of extra space, giving the schools room to grow and allowing the district to get rid of all portable classrooms.

While these projects have been a lot of work, Hambrick says the end result will be worth the effort.

"This has been a tremendous task and we're not finished yet. But we feel like this is going to be a great facilities for our students and staff."

Construction project manager Chuck Edwards says it's has been a long journey with hiccups along the way, some due to weather and others due to budget in a tough economy. Edwards says skyrocketing fuel prices are not the only things that have affected construction. The price of steel has doubled since the projects began back in spring of 2006.

But Edwards says he and his team never cut anything out of the plans.

"We’ve done a lot of work to not impact the instructional environment, our classrooms, things of that sort. The only things we've looked at to cut costs have been the aesthetic looking parts of the building."

Edwards says crews are working from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m., seven days a week, to make sure everything inside the buildings is ready. There may be some unfinished construction in out-lying areas, but that will all be done shortly after school begins.

Want to know why Oneal and teachers are leaving? Hambrick and his pet Burton. Ask teachers, custodians, food service, aides, nurses, maintainence people, support staff, don't think I missed anyone. Seriously ask any of these people what the state of our schools are like the will tell you

It is true that the administration does a poor job when it comes to the interview process. A friend of mine was interviewed at the beginning of June and was never contacted after the interview. If the job has been filled the least the adm. can do is to send a thank you for applying, but the job has been filled. Right now the personnel office leaves applicants hanging with no follow-up. Also, why are we so set on hiring Oklahoma teachers instead of Texas teachers? Check the number of teachers who drive down from Ok. everyday to teach. Are our homegrown certified teachers not good enough? I thought we were suppose to support local businesses/workers....what about supporting local teachers who need jobs. They are committed to our community by living here.

I totally agree with “tips” I had send applications to central office, and they NEVER return back a single email. The stadium, the new field house at Piner; they sure are done, but I do not think that are any worries or concerns for the lack of teachers for all the classrooms in Sherman. Do we have a new Principal for the SHS? And lets really think about why Mr. O’Neal left SHS. Not enough support from central office? Do we have a problem at Central Office?

Teacher, I totally agree with you!!!! You wonder what the people who work all summer do. I had a teacher tell me the last 10 years have been so unorganized inside the schools. The teachers return and nothing has been completed; materials for students, handbooks not printed, and books have not even been ordered. It is sad how much the Sherman school system has sunk. As far as Mr. Edwards comment about crews working 7 days a week 18 hrs a day, that is not the truth. The last 3 Sundays there has been no one at any of the schools except a few trucks at the new Washington School.

Thank anon for ytour comment! As an elementary school teacher in Sherman I think you for noticing that. You have no idea how frustrating it is to be allowed into your classroom at the last minute especially when you are moving into a brand new building. Happened to me last year, and it is happening again this year. To duh and Me, I understand your point as my son participates in several sports, however with better planning and administrating these projects could have been completed earlier and with less stress.

Plus the kids in sports like mine go back to school LONG before the other kids. They have to practice some place you know. Mine went back on Monday and now go from 8 to 4 and it will be that way the rest of the summer I guess anon never had a kid in sports.

Well anon, does it not make sense to complete the parts of the construction that dont require knocking down classroom walls while school is in session and waiting until the students are gone to do that part?! Come on dude, think

Funny how stadium, new field house at Piner, all the sports related projects were finished first. The teachers are not able to get into the schools yet to prepare! All hail TAKS, all hail football!

now if they can only remodel the central office staff to get back in touch with the many people that have applied for jobs that never hear anything months after they apply and reapply. Getting anything out of mitchison is like pulling teeth with a dull pair of plyers. Some locals have had to get jobs all the way in downtown dallas with other districts because they never respond to requests for information about if the jobs are even still open, and some of those jobs are for high ranking positions such as high school assistant principals and things.... They really need to rework the staff of central office to teach them how to be effective...

That's great but the band hall at shs still isn't ready so the kids are at the new school by Dillingham just to start summer band.
