GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. -- Money from a college bond is getting put to use. Classes are now in session at Grayson County College with anticipation for the future improvements. Emi FitzGerald has more.

The student population is up about 500 students from last fall at GCC. Many are looking forward to $44 million worth of improvements.

In the meantime, county residents are starting to pay for the changes.

The total tax revenue is increasing by 34% because voters approved the bond referendum last year. Even with this increase, the board of trustees has reduced the operations tax rate by two percentage points to help offset some of the bond increase.

College officials say maintenance costs less when facilities are new as well because they are not constantly repairing aging buildings.

Some departments are meeting in temporary facilities for this year as their new buildings are constructed.

"It’s now the community paying for the bonds that are renewing the campus. That really needed to be done. We're so grateful for their support," GCC president Dr. Alan Scheibmeir said.

College trustees are set to vote on the tax rate September 2 as required by state law.

You could let SISD manage the construction...That way it could be paid out over years and years and never get finished.

I'm sorry, but this is just a waste of money. I hate the fact they won by one vote for the bond election. This college has so many admin/student improvements they need to make before they add more. They do such a poor job alrady and now they is going to be more below average quality. This is very typical of this scool.
