ECU Women defeat Paul Quinn

11-23-07 - Junior Kacey Thomas poured in a game-high 22 points while nailing four 3-pointers as the East Central University Lady Tigers successfully opened the 2007-08 season with an 80-56 rout of Paul Quinn College Friday in the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Athletic Association Thanksgiving Classic.

Thomas was one of four Lady Tigers to get into double figures in scoring as Jastin Flenory and Lacey Goldwire followed with 16 points each while Kristie Dodgion added 14 as ECU shot 48.3 percent for the game, including 50 percent (12-of-24) in the first half.

Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers limited Paul Quinn (1-3) to 32.9 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers.

Thomas hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, to pace ECU (1-0). Flenory, who led the Lone Star Conference in field-goal percentage in 2006-07, was 5-of-7 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line to go along with four rebounds, three assists and a team-leading four steals to add on to her school-record career total of 148.

Goldwire, who hit 6-of-11 field-goal tries, contributed three assists and a pair of steals to the Lady Tiger cause and Dodgion was 6-of-12 as the ECU starters were a combined 25-of-43.

No Paul Quinn player reached double figures. However, Crystal Debose was close with nine on three treys. Shereel Brown pulled down a game-leading 13 rebounds to go with her six points as PQC held a 49-42 rebounding advantage.

The Lady Tigers tallied 40 points in each half while holding PQC to 28 in each stanza.

ECU trailed 2-0 early, but responded with a 10-0 run as Flenory scored five during that stretch, including an old-fashioned 3-point play.

PQC held two-more short-lived leads of 19-18 and 21-20, before the Lady Tigers outscored them 20-7 in the final 5:46 of the half. Two Flenory free throws put ECU on top for good, 22-21, to ignite the late first-half surge.

The Lady Tigers went on to score the first two buckets of the second half as Paul Quinn was unable to get closer than 13 the rest of the way.

ECU continues play in the SWOSU Classic on Saturday by taking on Texas-Permian Basin at 2 p.m.
