SHERMAN, Texas – Ross Hasten rushed 17 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns and added another score through the air to lead an Austin College football team that amassed 363 yards on the ground, and the ’Roos put together a big second half on their way to a 48-29 road victory over Birmingham-Southern College on Saturday. With the win, the ’Roos improve to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
The ’Roos found themselves in a hole early after giving up a touchdown on the first drive for the Panthers, and after answering back with a Matt Burton touchdown run the point after attempt was blocked and Birmingham-Southern raced the other way for the defensive two point conversion to make it a 9-6 game. The Panthers added a 54 yard touchdown pass just before the end of the first quarter to make it a 16-6 game.
Zach Mamot scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns early in the second quarter to cut it to a 16-13 game, and the ’Roos took their first lead of the game just before halftime when Matt Finke blocked a BSC field goal attempt and returned the loose ball 60 yards for a touchdown to make it 20-16 at the break.
Hasten put the ’Roos up 27-16 three minutes into the second half, and after Birmingham-Southern answered with another long touchdown pass to cut it to a five point game, Austin College quarterback Andy Braly connected with Hasten for a 39 yard touchdown to spark a run of 21 unanswered points for the ’Roos. Mamot added his second touchdown of the game and Hasten ripped off a 56 yard touchdown run to make it 48-22 with 7:38 left in the game.
The Panthers added a touchdown to cut it to a 48-29 with just over six minutes remaining, but the ’Roos would run out the clock for their third straight victory. The ’Roos piled up 489 total yards and averaged 7.8 yards-per-play in the game.
Braly finished the game completing 6-of-8 passes for 126 yards and a score and added 62 yards on the ground. Burton and Mamot added 37 and 36 yards rushing, respectively, and Evan Coachman had three catches for 49 yards. Josh Willis had seven tackles and Andy Stowe added six stops to lead the ’Roos.
Next up for the ’Roos is a home game against Rhodes College next Saturday in their Homecoming game, with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. at Apple Stadium.
