UT-Tyler Too Much for ’Roos

The University of Texas-Tyler got out to a big lead early and never looked back, handing the Austin College baseball team a 14-2 loss on Tuesday afternoon at Baker Field. With the loss, the ’Roos drop to 5-8 overall this season.

Three Austin College errors led to five runs for the Patriots over the first two innings, with four runs coming home in the top of the second to make it a 5-0 game. Austin Newell picked up a pair of runs batted in with a single in that inning and Chad Daleiden brought home another run with a sacrifice bunt.

Two more runs came home for the Patriots in the third when Aaron McCain singled home Brock Lemire and Newell hit a sacrifice fly, and in the fourth Nathan Skeen singled to right center to plate Brock Lemire and Jared Hood and McCain knocked in another run to make it a 10-0 game. The Patriots added one more run in the fifth, two in the sixth on a two run homer by Daleiden and one more run in the eighth to give them a 14-0 lead.

Austin College finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth when Lee Cohen launched an opposite field home run, and the ’Roos got one more run in the ninth when John Reisig doubled home Scooter Merritt to make it a 14-2 final.

Reisig finished 3-for-3 on the day and Cohen went 3-for-4 with his first homer of the season to lead the ’Roos. Bobby Schleizer gave up seven runs, only two earned, on six hits in 2.0 innings of work to take the loss for Austin College.

Clint Helms earned the win for the Patriots, throwing 5.0 shutout innings and scattering six hits. McCain and Hood each had three hits and Daleiden and Newell both drove in three runs to lead UT-Tyler.

Austin College gets back into Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend when the team travels to Jackson, Mississippi for a three game set with Millsaps on Saturday and Sunday.
