SHERMAN, Texas – Bennett Herrick drove in a pair of runs and four Austin College pitchers combined to scatter just five hits in a 3-0 shutout victory over McMurry University on Tuesday afternoon at Baker Field. With the win, the ’Roos improve to 7-11 overall on the year.
The game was a pitchers duel into the fifth inning, with McMurry’s Jared Wallace working on a one hitter through four innings and Austin College’s Tyler Steed and Will Chermak combining to surrender just three hits heading into the bottom of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Sean Muder and Matt Finke each reached base on back to back bunts to start off the inning, and two batters later John Reisig singled to shallow right to load the bases for Herrick. On the first pitch of the at bat, Herrick blasted a double to the deepest part of the field in straightaway center to score Muder and Finke, and Jordan Robison brought home Reisig four pitches later with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 after five.
That would prove to be all the run support the Austin College pitching staff would need, as John Schulmeister worked 1.1 scoreless innings and Christian Curtis struck out three and allowed zero hits in 2.2 innings of work to earn the save.
Herrick finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and Reisig and Muder each collected a pair of hits and scored twice. Chermak picked up the win, giving up one hit while striking out two in 3.0 innings of relief work. Wallace surrendered three runs on six hits while striking out four in 7.0 innings to take the loss for McMurry, and Jeff Jackson led McMurry with two hits.
