SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team split its doubleheader with the University of the Ozarks on Saturday, falling 3-2 in a pitchers duel in game one before winning 9-8 in dramatic fashion on a walk-off single by George Scheible in extra innings. The ’Roos are now 13-24 on the year.
In game one the Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first on the strength of doubles from Jeremy Hogan and Cory Briggs, but the ’Roos would answer back in the bottom half of the inning when Jordan Robison singled to score Sean Muder to make it a 2-1 game.
The two doubles in the first inning would be the last hits of the game for the Ozarks as Austin College pitcher Cory Stevens shut down the Eagles the rest of the game on his way to a complete game performance, but the Ozarks would still add a run in the top of the third when they took advantage of a throwing error to get a runner on third and used a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game after three.
Austin College got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Robison doubled and would later come home on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to 3-2, but the ’Roos were unable to close the gap on their way to the one run loss. Stevens tossed a two hit complete game and gave up three runs, two earned, while striking out three. Robison and Muder each went 2-for-3 with a double.
In game two Lee Cohen belted a solo shot in the bottom of the first to give the ’Roos a quick day and in the second inning Scheible began what would turn out to be a memorable senior day for the outfielder, hitting a three run homer to right center to push it to a 4-0 lead.
The Ozarks got right back into it with one swing when Hogan blasted a three run homer of his own, but one more run came home in the third for Austin College to make it a 5-3 lead.
It looked like that would be the way it would stay heading into the seventh inning, but that’s when the wheels came off for the ’Roos as they gave up five runs in the inning and the Eagles seized an 8-5 lead.
The ’Roos got something going early in the bottom of the seventh when Scheible was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and DJ Hardy and Bobby Schleizer each walked to load the bases, and one batter later Patrick Ray singled to left field and a fielding error allowed two runs to come home to cut it to a one run game.
The ’Roos tied things up in the next at bat when a wild pitch allowed Chase Muder to score from third and send the game into extras tied 8-8.
After John Schulmeister cruised through the top of the eighth to keep it a tie game, Sean Muder was hit by a pitch and then stole second, setting the stage for Scheible. Facing a 0-2 count with two outs Scheible ripped a single through the left side of the infield and Muder came all the way around from second to slide in ahead of the tag for the game winning run.
Scheible finished 2-for-3 with four runs batted in and Ray went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the ’Roos. Schulmeister pitched 1.1 scoreless and hitless innings and struck out three batters to pick up the win in relief.
Austin College and the Ozarks will meet again tomorrow at noon for the final game of this three game series.
