With their 3-0 win over LeTourneau, the Austin College volleyball team gave head coach Ed Garza his 400th career coaching victory on Tuesday night in Hughey Gym. The ’Roos opened their season by splitting with LeTourneau and Southwest Assemblies of God University and are now 1-1 overall on the season.
In their first match of the night SAGU, ranked in the top 20 in the NAIA national poll, handed the ’Roos a tough 3-2 defeat, toppling Austin College by scores of 18-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 15-11. Jessi Fleming had a team-best 16 kills and five total blocks to lead the ’Roos, Jordan Anderton had 47 assists and 11 digs, and Jenna Wilson added 12 kills and a team-best 22 digs in the match.
The ’Roos rebounded with the season opening loss in a big way, cruising past LeTourneau by scores of 25-15, 25-17, 25-8 behind eight kills and 11 digs from Wilson. Anderton also had a team best 30 assists, and Fleming had a team-best nine digs in a balanced attack from the ’Roos.
Austin College athletic teams participate as a member of the NCAA Division III and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
