All five Angelo State starters reached double figures as the Rams shot 61.3 percent for the game and knocked off East Central University 128-104 Thursday night in Lone Star Conference men’s basketball action at the Kerr Activities Center.
The Rams, who improved to 7-6, led from start to finish in jumping out to a 6-0 lead. As if 59.1 percent shooting in the first half wasn’t enough, Angelo hit at a 63.9 percent pace in the second half.
Angelo State also dominated the boards by a hefty 46-31 margin and had four less turnovers than ECU, 14-10.
LaMarshall Corbett fired in a game-high 31 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including a 7-of-10 effort from 3-point range, to go with a game-leading eight assists while Ram big man Johnny Barnes poured in 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting and pulled down 16 rebounds for the winners. Stavon Williams, with a pair of treys, also added 22 points and six assists.
Junior guard Maurice Abraham and senior Eric Allen, the Tigers’ leading scorer on the season, each tossed in 21 points in a losing effort. Abraham was 3-of-5 from 3-point range and dished out six assists before fouling out, while Allen was 3-of-7 from beyond the arch and grabbed eight rebounds.
Also for ECU, senior Darren Avery finished with 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting, with a pair of 3-pointers, and also collected four assists. Junior Wayne Andrews added 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point land. He also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, added three assists and recorded one steal and a block before fouling out.
Denarius Darby finished with a game-high four steals on the night to go with nine points and a pair of assists. Freshman Bobby McAdoo drilled a pair of treys and finished with eight points in only seven minutes of play.
Also getting to double figures in scoring for the Rams were Derrick Webster with 16 points to go with six assists and Shavar Burch with 15 points and nine boards.
The Tigers, who trailed by a 63-48 margin at the half, pulled within eight points on two occasions in the final 20 minutes, but got no closer. The first was a layup from Abraham to get ECU to within 85-77 with 11:34 left and the second was an Andrews free shot to make it 86-78 with 11:12 remaining.
But ASU scored the next five points on a layup and 3-pointer by Corbett.
ECU did cut the deficit to nine, 96-87, with 8:22 to go after a pair of Abraham free throws and later got to within 99-90 off an Abraham 3-pointer with 7:54 left.
But the Rams built the lead to double digits and pulled away for the victory.
The Tigers, 5-8 on the season, are back in action on Saturday against Abilene Christian at 4 p.m. in the Kerr Center. ECU then launches LSC North play on Wednesday against the University of Central Oklahoma at 8 p.m.
