’Roo Men’s Hoops Tops Colorado College
SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College men’s basketball team got 13 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals from Josh Saunders and shot 49% from the field for the game on their way to a 75-66 victory over visiting Colorado College on Friday night in Hughey Gym to improve to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
The ‘Roos came out hot early on, jumping out to a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game and pushing the lead to 11-3 on an Austin Brewster basket with 14:24 left in the opening half. The Tigers trimmed the margin to six points before a pair of free throws from Antoine Thompson and a three by Ransom Okpala pushed it to a 20-9 game with 10:52 on the clock.
Colorado College cut the lead down to five at 24-19 with 6:35 left before the break, but the ‘Roos answered with seven unanswered points capped off by a Jordan Hancock three to make it a 31-19 game with 4:39 showing on the clock. The Tigers once again started to chip away at the lead and got to within five, but a baseline dunk by Walter Phillips and a free throw from Saunders sent Austin College into halftime leading 34-26.
Colorado College came storming back to open the second half, scoring the first six points to cut it to a 34-32 game, and after an Okpala jumper gave the ‘Roos a 39-35 cushion the Tigers scored five in a row to grab their first lead of the game at 40-39 with 14:06 left to play. The lead was short lived, however, as Okpala nailed another trey to key a 15-5 run that gave Austin College a 54-45 lead with 9:18 remaining in the game.
The Tigers would pull within four at 58-54 with 5:35 left, but that’s as close as they would get as Austin College went 6 for 6 on free throw sin the final 52 seconds to close the game out and pull out the nine point victory.
Saunders hit 4-of-8 shots on his way to a double-double and Okpala hit 4-of-6 threes on his way to 18 points to pace the ‘Roos offensively. Antoine Thompson added 16 points and five boards and Phillips and Alen Michael each chipped in 10 in the victory.
Jeremiah Waters knocked down five threes on his way to 16 points and Ryan Milne added 15 points and six assists to lead the Tigers and Ian Rewoldt chipped in 12 in the losing effort.

SHERMAN, Texas – After trailing by 18 at the half, the Austin College women’s basketball team came storming back to cut the Colorado College lead to three with under five minutes remaining, but the Tigers managed to hang on and hand the ‘Roos an 83-72 loss on Friday evening despite a career high 33 points from Christina Kime. The ‘Roos are now 1-12 overall this season and 1-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Austin College got a pair of threes early from Angeleena Young and Kime on their way to a quick 7-3 lead, but Colorado College scored eight unanswered to kick start a 14-2 run and grab a 17-9 lead with 12:39 left in the opening half. The Tigers pushed the lead to 24-11 before the ‘Roos scored four straight to cut it to a nine point game with 8:54 on the clock.
After Colorado College scored to push the margin back to double figures, Kime scored 11 in a row for Austin College to keep the ‘Roos in the game after the Tiger lead ballooned back up to 17. Kime knocked down a pair of threes and added a three point play over that stretch to make it a 39-28 game with four minutes left before the break. However, the Tigers would go on a 10-1 run to up by 20 before another basket from Kime made it 49-31 heading into the locker room.
The Tigers maintained their lead early in the second half, taking a 58-41 margin under 16 minutes but the ‘Roos started to methodically chip away at the lead, getting points from the free throw line and knocking down timely baskets to get the game all the way back to single digits on a pair of Kime free throws with 7:35 left to make it 66-57.
