The Austin College softball team dropped both halves of its doubleheader with visiting Northwood University on Tuesday night, falling 11-3 in game one and dropping game two by a final score of 10-4 despite jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. The ’Roos are now 4-12 on the season with the two defeats.
In game one, the Knights took advantage of a pair of Austin College errors to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. Abbey Hayes ripped an RBI double and came around to score to cut it to a 4-2 lead after three innings, but Northwood plated seven runs in the top of the sixth to push it to an 11-2 game. Austin College got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Suzanne Beltran RBI double, but that’s as close as the ’Roos would get in the 11-3 defeat.
Amanda Peiser took the loss after surrendering nine runs, five earned, on 11 hits in 5.1 innings of work. Beltran went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the ‘Roos offensively.
In game two, the ‘Roos jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning on a three run homer from Stefanie Faith, her seventh of the season. That remained the score until the top of the fourth, when Northwood roped four base hits and drew a walk in their first six at bats of the inning to put four runs across the plate and take a 4-3 lead.
Northwood added three more runs in the top of the fifth when Taylor Jones hit a solo homer and two batters later Megan Schoenherr hit a two run blast to make it 7-3, and three more runs came home in the sixth to push it to a 10-3 game. Austin College would attempt to mount a comeback in the seventh with Faith ripping an RBI single to the wall in center, but the ‘Roos would strand two runners in the final inning to make it a 10-4 final.
Amber Pemberton took the loss after surrendering four runs, three earned, on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. Faith finished 2-for-4 with four runs batted in to lead the ‘Roos offensively.
