Austin College Student-Athletes Earn Awards

The Austin College coaches and team members honored more than 40 student-athletes, including the Austin College male and female athletes of the year, in its annual Athletics Convocation on Thursday night in Sid Richardson Gymnasium on the Austin College campus.
By virtue of head coaches’ selections, senior basketball men’s soccer player Andy Johnson of Tulsa, Oklahoma and senior volleyball player Adrienne Reynolds of Arlington, Texas were selected as the Pete Cawthon Male Athlete and Gene Day Female Athlete of the Year.
Women’s swimmer Lauren Wheeler of Southlake, Texas and men’s football player Madison Ross of Fort Worth, Texas were named by the coaches as the Tim Jubela Freshmen Athletes of the Year. Wheeler set seven Austin College records in her first season with the team and became just the second women’s swimmer to earn All-SCAC honors, while Ross was named the SCAC Newcomer of the Year after rushing for 290 yards with an average of 5.3 yards per carry.
Reynolds, a three-year letter winner and starter, was among the national leaders in both total digs and digs per set. Her average of 6.14 digs-per-set led the SCAC by a wide margin, and helped her earn two SCAC Player of the Week awards as well as 1st Team All-SCAC recognition. She is also a SCAC Academic Honor Roll member.
Johnson, a four-year letter winner and starter, was a SCAC All-Sportsmanship Team honoree in addition to being one of the top defenders in the league. Despite playing a defensive position, he was third on the team with five goals scored this year for a total of 10 points. Johnson has also been a SCAC Academic Honor Roll member throughout his time at Austin College.
