Baseball Falls to Ouachita Baptist in GAC Opener

In the first Great American Conference baseball game of the 2013 season, the East Central University baseball team dropped 1 -6 decision to Ouachita Baptist at Tiger Field.

The Tigers (4-6, 0-1 GAC) tallied five hits and scored one run in the game, while OBU (4-4-1, 1-0 GAC) garnered 15 hits and six runs scored. ECU saw hits from five different players and earned seven walks.

OBU opened the scoring, with one run in the first inning and added single scores in the third and fifth innings before garnering three in the sixth for a 6-0 lead heading into the final three innings.

The Tigers were held without a run scored until the bottom of the ninth inning. Juniors Josh Lavender, Jake Caton and senior Benny Woodard were all walked to load the bases and Lavender scored on a passed ball.

Junior Robert Buitrago suffered the loss after six innings of work where he allowed 14 hits and struck out four batters. Sophomore Gerry Sifuentes pitched the last three innings, allowing just one hit.

The two Tiger teams will renew the series, Sunday, Feb. 17 with a double-header scheduled to start at noon.
