The East Central University volleyball team earned a sweep over St. Gregory’s, winning 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-10) at the Kerr Activities Center in non-conference action.
The Lady Tigers (2-5) won their second-straight match in three sets in the last three days. ECU was led by sophomore Hayley Gerken, who tallied 10 kills and a .500 (10k-0e-20ta) hitting percentage. Senior Danielle Essix added eight kills, senior Noelle Cope tallied seven and senior Sarah Nelson added six.
The Lady Tigers took control from the opening serve of the match, using a 3-0 run to open set one. ECU never allowed the Cavaliers (3-9) to get closer than one point in the match (7-6) and used a late 10-0 run, with senior Jessica Wilkinson serving, to earn the 25-13 win.
ECU again took an early 8-0 advantage in the second set before SGU was allowed to get on the scoreboard. The Lady Tigers kept the pressure on through the set and did not allow the Cavaliers to score more than two points in a row the rest of the set to earn the 25-9 win.
SGU came out stronger in the third set, taking an early 1-2 advantage. However the Lady Tigers used a 5-0 run to take over the lead, 6-2. ECU kept fighting and used several four-or-five point runs to earn a 25-10 win.
The Lady Tigers had a strong hitting performance, with a .400 (46k-10e-90ta) mark for the night as a team. ECU also held SGU to a -.136 (10k-22e-88ta) hitting percentage.
The Lady Tigers will hit the road for two matches, Saturday, Sept. 21 in Oklahoma City. ECU will face Wayland Baptist (1 p.m.) and Oklahoma City (3 p.m.) at Abe Lemons Arena.
