Big hitting matches by Tatiana Booth and Yakira Essix, along with a double-double effort from Shayla May, lifted the East Central University volleyball team to a 3-0 Lone Star Conference victory over Texas A&M-Commerce Thursday night at the Kerr Center.
Booth, who had a .583 hitting percentage, and Essix each collected eight kills. Noelle Cope, with a .462 hitting percentage, finished with seven and May recorded 17 assists and 11 digs as the Lady Tigers swept the three sets by 25-8, 25-22 and 25-17 scores.
ECU improved to 4-24 on the season and 2-9 in the LSC while snapping a 10-match losing streak.
The Lady Tigers hit at .211 pace while the Lions were only at .040 due to 24 hitting errors. A&M-Commerce also struggled with five service errors, five reception miscues and three ball-handling errors on the night. ECU committed only 13 hitting miscues to go with three service errors and just one reception miscue.
Megan Kimak also collected 11 digs to help lead the Lady Tiger defensive effort.
Also for ECU, Taylor Brown contributed nine assists and Sarah Nelson added four kills with a .375 hitting percentage.
Naomi Mays topped the Lions, who fell to 11-13 and 3-8, with a game-high 10 kills and Rachael Shelton finished with a game-leading 23 assists. Reagan Hayes ended up with 13 digs in a losing cause.
The Lady Tigers close out the home portion of their 2010 schedule on Saturday by hosting Texas Woman’s University at 11 a.m. in another LSC matchup. ECU then wraps up the season with road matches at Southwestern Oklahoma State on Nov. 4 and at Central Oklahoma on Nov. 6.
