The Austin College football team had its hands full through three quarters on Saturday afternoon, but 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter put the game away and lifted the ’Roos to a 34-17 victory over the Sewanee Tigers at Jerry Apple Stadium. The ’Roos are now 3-2 overall and 1-2 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on the year.
Sewanee got on the scoreboard first on a 29 yard field goal by Trey Knighton with 5:47 left in the first quarter but Austin College got a field goal of its own from Mitch Anderson from 37 yards out to tie things up heading into the second quarter.
The ’Roos grabbed the lead with 4:45 left in the opening half on a 26 yard reception by Braydon MaQuar to make it 10-3 but the Tigers responded with a four yard touchdown run by Zeke Wilson to cap off a five play, 43 yard drive with 2:05 left in the second quarter. However, Austin College wasn’t quite done as Travis Zambiasi found Jordan Schell for a 53 yard score with 40 seconds remaining in the opening half and the ’Roos went into the locker room leading 17-10.
The Tigers once again knotted things up when Lee Schurlknight found Robert Spilman in the back of the endzone with 2:37 left in the third to make it a 17-17 game heading into the final quarter of action. Anderson hit a 36 yard field goal early in the fourth to make it a 20-17 game in favor of the ’Roos, and the momentum shifted completely in favor of the ’Roos with just under six minutes left to play.
The ’Roos pushed their lead to 27-17 with 5:51 to play on a 37 yard touchdown toss from Blake Towery to Greg Harrell and just 16 seconds later the lead grew to 34-17 when Ben Youngblood scooped up a fumble recovery on the first play of the next Sewanee possession and raced 34 yards for a touchdown to put the game away.
Zambiasi finished the game completing 10-of-19 passes for 156 yards with two touchdowns and two picks to lead the ’Roos and Brogan Funderburg added 104 yards on 18 carries. MaQuar finished with five catches for 81 yards and Harrell added for catches for 65 yards. Defensively, the ’Roos were led by Kenneth Eneh’s 16 tackles, including 1.5 for loss and a sack.
Schurlknight finished the game completing 18-of-28 passes for 117 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, Wilson carried 20 times for 96 yards and Chad Morehead caught 11 passes for 64 yards. Zac Atkins had nine tackles including 2.0 for loss.
Austin College is back on the road next week when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Birmingham-Southern College.
