ECU Men’s Tennis Advanced to GAC Championship Match

The East Central University men’s tennis team (No. 3) advanced to the 2013 Great American Conference Championship match for the second-straight season after defeating No. 2 Southeastern Oklahoma State, 5-2. The Tigers (7-9, 1-2 GAC) had fallen to the Savage Storm, 2-7, April 11 during regular season action.

Before the start of the match, three members of the ECU squad were honored by the GAC. Sophomores Max DeJuan and Marc Fillat and senior Stefan Stein have all earned All-GAC First team honors. DeJuan was also named the 2013 GAC Newcomer of the Year. DeJuan finished the regular season with a 6-12 singles record and an 8-8 mark in doubles. Fillat was 7-10 in singles and 8-8 in doubles, while Stein was 2-9 in singles and 7-4 in doubles.

ECU was led by sophomore Victor Blasco, who earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles and paired with junior Julian Caminos for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.

The Tigers took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches, with Blasco and Caminos earning the win at No. 2 doubles over Filip Pavlovic and Martin Bedecarratz. Sophomore Max DeJuan and Marc Fillat then claimed an 8-3 win over Laercio Lobo and Billy Haugen at No. 3 doubles.

The fourth point of the match was scored by DeJuan at No. 2 singles when he defeated Pavlovic 6-4, 6-3. The match-winning point was scored by Caminos, who defeated Tiago Ferreira 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5 singles.

The Tigers will face No. 1 Ouachita Baptist, Saturday, April 20 at 11 a.m. in the championship match.

Women’s Tennis Advances to GAC Championship Match

ADA – After earning a first-round bye the No. 2 East Central University women’s tennis team advanced to the 2013 Great American Conference Championship match with a 5-3 win over No. 3 Harding. Prior to starting the match senior Marta Valles and sophomore Bernardita Muscillo were both honored as All-GAC First Team picks.

Valles finished the 2013 regular season with a 10-10 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the league. Muscillo was 6-10 overall and 4-1 in the GAC.

In the semifinal match against Harding, the Lady Tigers (9-9, 5-1 GAC) started things off by falling behind 1-2 after the doubles matches. Sophomore Aurelie Rodriguez and junior Mariah Vargas earned the point with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over Chelsea Lanier and Kaleigh Wagner.

Harding took a 3-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles, but ECU took control of the match winning No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles.

Vargas first added a point with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles over Maria Moreno. Rodriguez then added a 6-1, 6-3 win over Katie Huff at No. 4 singles to tie the match at three.

Valles gave the Lady Tigers the lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Benyapa Phumtip at No. 1 singles. The match-winning point came from sophomore Elisabeth Dignard, who defeated Lanier 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

The Lady Tigers will now move on to face No. 1 Arkansas Tech, Saturday, April 20 at 2 p.m. for the championship match. This is the second-straight season that ECU has been in the GAC Championship match.
