Reeling Big 12 moves to add TCU

Leaders of the Big 12 Conference have cleared the way to make TCU its 10th member.

The league announced the decision Thursday and said the Big 12 board had "authorized negotiations" with TCU.

The defending Rose Bowl champion agreed earlier this year to leave the Mountain West Conference after this season for the Big East, which has an automatic BCS berth.

But the Big East is on the verge of losing Syracuse and Pittsburgh to the ACC. TCU Chancellor Victor Boschini says the Big 12 discussions "have huge implications for TCU" and would allow the school "to return to old rivalries."

The Big 12 lost Nebraska (Big Ten) and Colorado (Pac-12) over the summer and will lose Texas A&M to the SEC next year. Missouri is also exploring options to leave the Big 12, and did not participate in Thursday's vote regarding TCU.

It is interesting how the schools that abandoned the old SWC to seek greater fortune in thw Big 12 are now scrambling to bring schools they abandoned back into their fold. Of course, TAMU has now gone off to the SEC. It's a shame the old SWC schools never leveraged the fact that Texas was becoming a major population center and media market. The SWC should have agressively expanded, instead of breaking up as it did. No foresight, no vision. The B12, B11, B-no, that one's taken, B-9, B-8. That's it the Big 8! Now where did Nebraska go? What a mess.

I'm all for TCU joining the Big XII but TCU beating Oklahoma (17-10) in a rare rebuilding year for Stoops and a team that lost 10 players to the NFL draft and were 8-5 for the year isn't exactly a case closing argument no matter how hard it is to win in Norman. The fact that if the Big XII doesn't add schools, it will be no more, and with TCU being located right in the middle of Big XII country makes more sense than anything else to me.

This is the first thing the Big 12 has done that makes sense. They should NOT re-creat the Southwest Conference, but TCU would be a good fit. As would BYU, Air Force and Houston.
