The Austin College baseball was narrowly edged by the University of Texas-Tyler on Tuesday night, falling 4-2 after having jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the game. The ‘Roos are now 2-11 overall on the year.
The ‘Roos jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning when Austin Molinaro doubled down the right field line to score Mason Leech, and later came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Todd Takabuki. That remained the score until the third, when Hayden Chick singled home a run to put the Patriots on the board and cut the margin in half.
Two runs came home in the fourth as the Patriots grabbed a 3-2 lead, and Aaron McCain scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth to make it 4-2 in favor of UT-Tyler. That would be all of the cushion the Patriots would need, as the UTT pitching staff limited the ‘Roos to just three hits the rest of the way.
Austin College finished with six hits as a team, with Molinaro and Leech each going 1-for-3 to lead the way offensively. Blaine Tew absorbs the loss, surrendering three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work.
Matt Sheppard picked up the win for UT-Tyler, while Derek Miller earned the save, pitching a perfect ninth inning in relief.
