’Roo Baseball and Softball Helps Out in the Community

Members of the Austin College baseball and softball teams recently had the chance to work with a local run, pitch and hit competition for children ages seven through 14, as well as Audra’s All-Stars, a group that puts on a softball game for people with special needs. The ’Roos worked with both groups on May 5.

In all, 19 members of the ’Roo baseball team and seven members of the softball team worked with the two groups, with half helping the children in the morning at the Run, Pitch and Hit contest while half worked with Audra’s All-Stars at their softball game during the evening.

On Saturday morning, children took part in pitching, hitting and running contests hoping to get the highest scores in each event in an effort to qualify for sectionals. The winner and runner-up for each contest qualifies with the hopes of then moving on to the finals, which will be held at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington during a Texas Rangers game. The Austin College students helped to oversee the events and also kept the scores of each participant.

At the Audra’s All-Stars softball game, members of both teams worked with the participants by pushing wheelchairs, providing support and generally helping to fill in the gaps that their disabilities cause.

Baseball players who participated were Colt Herron, Alan Parrent, Austin Vaughan, Tyler Appelquist, Will Schommer, Landon Hendrix, Todd Takabuki, Shane Williams, Ryan Hayes, Marshall Korn, Dylan Day, Jason Poole, Josh Coughennower, Austin Molinaro, Blaine Tew, Travis Gibson, Brock Inouye, Mason Leech and Patrick Renz.

Among the softball players who worked with the group were Sam Matulis, Suzanne Beltran, Rachel Ramos, Briana Slawson, Chelsea Delaney, Jenny Dowsey and Heather Farquhar. This is the second year the ’Roos have participated in the Run, Pitch and Hit competition, and they hope to make both events an annual spring tradition.
