SE Finishes Seventh in Spring Opener

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Southeastern bounced back from a rough first round to post the second round's third best score and finish seventh place out of 18 teams with a two-round total of 601 at the Las Vegas Desert Classic hosted by Missouri St. ,Louis in Las Vegas, Nev.

The tournament was hosted on the par-72 Desert course at Paiute Golf Club-Snow Mountain and played over March 2-3.

The Savage Storm posted a 291 in the second round, just three strokes off the day's best team round, but turned in a 310 in the event's first round which was halted on Sunday night and finished on Monday morning.

Five of SE's six players posted improved scores in the second round, led by Jeff Hunter who posted a team-best 147 for the event to finish tied for 13th. He did so with a second-round 69 after finishing the first round with a 78.

Joey Schroeder posted a four-stroke improvement from round one to round two, turning in a 73 on Tuesday after a first-round 77 to finish tied for 20th with a 150.

Robert Perry finished two shots behind him after cutting six shots off his total with a second-round 73 after turning in a 79 on day one. His 152 was tied for 36th.

Marcos Sevilla Suarez was the only player to lose ground from round to round, turning in a first round 76, followed by a 78 on the second 18 to post a 154 and finish tied for 46th.

Ash Alstadt rounded out SE's five team members with the most significant improvement from round to round of all the players, turning in a 76 in round two after posting an 85 in the opening round. His combined 163 was good for a tie for 76th.

Matt McIntosh played as an individual for the event, turning in an improved 75 after carding a 79 on day one, with his two-round 154 good for a tie for 46th.

The Storm's 601 total was 16 shots behind event winners West Florida and Redlands.

SE finished three shots behind Great American Conference rival Arkansas Tech who was tied for fifth.

Only two other Central Region opponents played the event, both from the MIAA, with Lindenwood finishing 10th with a 608 and Lincoln finishing 14th with a 629.

In all 18 teams participated in the event with a total of 101 individual competitors.

Southeastern will be back in action on March 10-11 at the David Falconer Golf Classic in Danville, Ark. hosted by ATU.
