SE Opens GAC Schedule 2-0

Southeastern women's tennis evened its 2013 record at 6-6 and opened the Great American Conference slate at 2-0 after dominant wins over Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Ark.

The Savage Storm moves to 6-6 overall on the year and opens the league schedule a perfect 2-0.

In the weekend's opener against OBU, SE jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after doubles.

Cassaundra Braaten and Fabiola Juarez took an 8-6 win at No. 2 and the duo of Marina Dias and Elba Haugen snagged an 8-5 win at No. 3 to counteract a tough loss at No. 1 doubles.

Sabina Mardarenko pushed the Storm edge to 3-1 with a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles, winning 6-7, 6-2, 10-8.

Andreea Georgescu pushed SE closer to victory with a straight sets victory at No. 2, taking it 6-3, 6-4, while Juarez clinched the match at No. 3 with a win in three sets, going 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Braaten and Haugen ran up the score at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, with Braaten cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win and Haugen snagging a 6-2, 6-4 win.

OBU would pick up a win at No. 6 to fashion he 7-2 final.

The Storm would carry its momentum into day two of the one-city road swing, jumping out to a 3-0 win after doubles play.

Mardarenko and Georgescu opened doubles with an 8-3 win at No. 1, followed by matching 8-4 wins by Braaten and Juarez at No. 2 as well as Dias and Haugen at No. 3.

Mardarenko pushed the score to 4-0 with a straight-sets win at No. 1, winning 6-2, 6-1.

Georgescu clinched the match at No. 2 by surviving a tough challenge with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-7

Juarez also faced a stiff challenge and came out victorious, winning 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 at No. 3.

Braaten, Haugen and Dias finished out the sweep with straight-set wins at Nos. 4-though 6, respectively.
