DURANT, Okla. – No. 5 Southeastern will set out to hold and possibly extend its lead atop the Great American Conference standings when it hosts Southwestern Oklahoma State in a four-game series at the Southeastern Softball Field April 5-6.
Friday's games are slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch, while Saturday's double-header is set for noon.
The Savage Storm come into the contest at 28-7 on the season overall and 13-3 in GAC play which puts them atop the league with an .813 winning percentage, with a two-game lead in the loss column over East Central in second at 13-5.
The Bulldogs come into the weekend at 12-26 overall on the year and 6-16 in league play in ninth place.
SE is coming off a rain shortened series against Arkansas Tech which it split 1-1 with each team winning a 4-3 contest.
It was the second-straight rain shortened series as SE's home series against Southern Nazarene was held to just two games the weekend prior.
Southeastern enters the weekend leading the league in fielding, second in the GAC in pitching and third in hitting and is the only team in the conference in the top-three in all three categories.
The pitching staff has put together a combined ERA of 2.57 while holding batters to a .259 average.
The starters have taken turns stepping up to the challenge, with Mindy McElroy leading the team and second in the GAC in ERA with a 1.78 mark and an 11-2 record.
Jacee Bennett is sixth in the conference with a 2.48 ERA, but is second in the conference in strikeouts with 118 and leads the league with six saves.
The Storm offense is hitting .289 combined on the year, but has learned how to manufacture runs as they lead the league in sac hits with 66, but are last in the GAC in home runs with 16.
Courtney Moore leads the charge with a .379 average and is fifth in the conference in RBI with 27.
Jessica Simmons and Lacie Cook are each over the .300 mark at the plate, with Simmons leading the conference in stolen bases with 27 and runs scored with 34.
SWOSU comes into the weekend fifth in the league in hitting with a .277 average, ninth in pitching with a staff ERA of 4.65 and fourth in fielding at .959 on the year.
The Bulldogs come to town on a four-game losing streak after getting swept by Ouachita Baptist, while the team has lost seven-straight in GAC play.
The club is led offensively by Audra Chambless who hits at a .433 clip, while Ashley Filer and Kori Oord are each batting over .300.
Oord leads the team in home runs with eight and RBI with 23.
Julianne Martinez leads the team in starts and appearances and has put together a 10-13 record in 20 starts with a 3.68 ERA in 129.1 innings pitched.
