Southeastern Opens 2013 Against Muleriders

Southeastern opens the 2013 season with its first Thursday game since the 2010 season when it hosts Southern Arkansas at 6 p.m. at Paul Laird Field on Sept. 5.

Against the Muleriders: Saturday marks the 38th meeting all-time between Southeastern and Southern Arkansas. That is the second-most meetings with a GAC opponent in Arkansas behind the 49 meetings with Ouachita Baptist.The series dates back to a 1952 meeting which SE lost 27-14.SAU would win three of the first four with the teams tying in 1954, 7-7. SE got its first win, 19-7, in 1956 and won four-stright which is its longest run int he series. SAU owns a six-game winning streak between 1968 and 1974. SAU won last season's meeting 31-24.

About the Coaches: Ray Richards (Northern Michigan, 1981) took over the reins for the Southeastern Oklahoma State football program prior to the 2005 season and quickly built on to SE's successful history.

Richards has compiled a 40-43 record at SE and an overall career record of 54-73, with head coaching stints at Southeastern and Southwest Baptist University.

The 2012 squad posted a 4-6 season and a seventh place finish in the second season of Great American Conference play.

SE had five all conference award winners, with a pri of second team selections and three honorable mention picks.

In eight seasons at SE, Richards' teams have produced 25 first team all-conference honors as well as 39 all-conference second team honors.

His teams also won eight specialty awards in the LSC, including his own Coach of the Year nod following the 2005 season.

Bill Keopple (Central Ark., 1982) became the 19th head football coach at Southern Arkansas in December 2008. He is now in his fifth season as the head coach of the Muleriders.

Keopple brings 29 years of coaching experience to the Muleriders, including 18 years as an assistant on the collegiate level with stops at Arkansas, Boise State Tulsa and Central Arkansas.

Keopple came to SAU from Arkansas High in Texarkana where he led his teams to two consecutive state championships 2006 and 2007.

Southeastern Reveals New Mascot Mark your calendars for Thursday, September 5, as that will be the day the new Savage Storm mascot will be revealed for the first time.

"We're thrilled to have this opportunity to present a new Savage Storm mascot,'' said Southeastern Oklahoma State University president Larry Minks. "Our mascot will become demonstrative of the pride, resilience and strength we believe personifies Southeastern.

People will have the opportunity to not only see the mascot at athletic events, but at other many events within the University community and the Durant area.

To celebrate, the University will hold a Savage Storm Rally on Sept. 5 at 12:30 p.m. in the Glen D. Johnson Student Union. Students, faculty, and staff will gather for this event, which will include the unveiling of the official university mascot imagery and logo, and a preview of the mascot as a life-size cutout, in addition to remarks by a number of individuals.

A community reveal event is planned for later that day at 5:30 p.m. at Tailgate Alley (across from Paul Laird Football Field). The Savage Storm will then kick off the football season at 6 p.m. against Southern Arkansas.

To further engage the campus and community, there will be a "Name Your Mascot" contest taking place from September 5 to September 21. Participants will have 10 days to submit a name they feel best represents Southeastern and its mascot followed by an on-line vote. Details on the contest will be announced on Sept. 5 The winning name will be announced homecoming weekend (Oct. 4-5) with the new mascot leading the team on the field against Texas A&M-Commerce on Oct. 5.

SE picked Tied for Sixth in Preseason Poll. Southeastern football will open the 2013 season picked to finish sixth according to the 2013 Great American Conference Preseason Poll.
