SHERMAN, Texas – The Austin College baseball team fell in both halves of its doubleheader against Texas Lutheran on Friday evening, falling 2-1 in game one and 4-1 in game two to drop the ‘Roos to 2-14 overall and 0-5 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
In game one, the teams took a scoreless tie into the fourth inning when Texas Lutheran finally broke through with a sacrifice fly by Ryan Hill to take a 1-0 lead, but Austin College fought back in the bottom half of the inning with Todd Takabuki’s RBI single scoring Hunter Wilson to square things up. That remained the score until the top of the seventh, when Tony Gennusa blasted a solo homer to put TLU on top 2-1, and the ‘Roos would strand the tying run at third in the bottom half of the inning.
Marshall Korn took the loss for Austin College, surrendering two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings of work, and Gus Daniel went 2-for-3 to lead Austin College offensively. Aaron Aleman tossed a complete game and struck out nine to earn the win for TLU.
In game two, Texas Lutheran took advantage of an Austin College turnover in the top of the first to jump on top 1-0, but once again the ‘Roos were able to come back to knot things up, this time with Gus Daniel coming home to score on a base knock by James Arguello in the bottom of the third.
The score was tied until the top of the sixth, when Keaton Bohrmann blasted a two run homer to put the Bulldogs up 3-1, and one more run would come home in the ninth and Blake Balazs was able to shut Austin College down in the bottom half of the inning on his way to the save.
Blaine Tew took the loss for Austin College, allowing three runs, only one earned, on five hits in 6.0 innings of work. Takabuki went 2-for-5 to lead Austin College on offense. Dwayne Snider picked up the win for TLU, allowing one run on eight hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Austin College and TLU are scheduled to finish up their three game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Baker Field.
