Tigers Fall to Arkansas-Monticello

The East Central University men’s basketball team fell, 59-69, to Arkansas-Monticello in Great American Conference action at the Kerr Activities Center in the first game of 2013.

The Tigers (4-7, 1-4 GAC) were led by junior Colby Carr who tallied his third overall and second-straight double-double of the season. Carr garnered career highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Braxton Reeves added a career-best 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from three-point range.

The Boll Weevils (7-6, 2-3 GAC) opened the game with a 9-3 run before ECU scored its first field goal with just over 15 minutes left to play. UAM kept pushing and was up 9-22, with 11 minutes left to play, when the Tigers mounted a come-back over the next three minutes.

ECU used an 11-2 run during the span to cut the lead to four and kept the deficit between four to seven points for the rest of the first half. The Tigers trailed 29-34 heading into the intermission.

However, the momentum was short lived, as the Boll Weevils put together a 13-3 run in the first four minutes of the second half to push the lead back out to 15. UAM kept the advantage in double-digit for the next 13 minutes.

ECU then mounted another come-back run that cut the deficit to seven (59-66), with two minutes left on the clock, after an 8-0 run. The Boll Weevils hit the final shot of the game 40 seconds later to push the lead back to 10 and give the final score of 59-69.

The box score was pretty even, with the teams both recording 35 rebounds and shooting around 43 percent from the field. However, the key difference was in turnovers and points off turnovers. ECU committed 21 turnovers and forced just 13 by UAM. But the Boll Weevils took better advantage of the mistakes and tallied 23 points off the Tigers turnovers and ECU earned just nine off UAM’s mistakes.

The Tigers will return to Wayne Cobb Court, Saturday, Jan. 5 for a 4 p.m. game against Southern Arkansas.
