The East Central University baseball team fell to Henderson State, 1-11, in eight innings at Clyde Berry Field in Great American Conference action.
The Tigers (5-8, 1-3 GAC) earned five hits from five different batters. Senior Justin Sutherland recorded a hit and 11 putouts for ECU. Junior Robert Buitrago suffered the loss, after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing six hits.
The Reddies (7-2, 3-1 GAC) were the first to score, earning a run in the bottom of the first, third and fourth innings to go up 0-3.
ECU started its offense in the top of the fifth inning, scoring a run to cut the deficit to 1-3. Senior Mac Grace got the Tigers going with a single to left field. Sutherland added a single and was followed on base by junior Michael Mariano, who single to right field to load the bases. The next batter struck out for the second out of the inning, but junior Brede Kochi drew a walk to send Grace across the plate.
HSU added eight more runs over the next three innings for the 1-11 win after the eighth inning.
The teams will continue the series, Saturday, Feb. 22 in Arkadelphia, with a double-header scheduled to start at noon.
