Tigers Scare Savage Storm in 3-0 Halloween Night Win

The East Central University volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-17) sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma State in Great American Conference action on the annual Black Out night in the Kerr Activities Center.

The Lady Tigers (10-15, 7-4 GAC) had a well-rounded attack, with no player garnering more than nine kills and four with six or more. Sophomore Hayley Gerken and senior Noelle Cope led the team with nine kills each. Gerken added four block assists, one service ace and a .474 (9k-0e-19ta) hitting percentage. Cope hit .304 (9k-2e-23ta) and added nine kills.

ECU took an early lead in the first set and kept it throughout. The Lady Tigers used a 4-0 run to push ahead, 9-4, and kept the pressure on the Savage Storm (10-15, 4-6 GAC) to earn the 25-17 win.

The second set was tight at the start, but ECU again took the needed two-point lead and slowly increased the advantage with small runs throughout the set. Southeastern made a late 4-0 run, but the Lady Tigers buckled down and earned the 25-13 win.

The third set started with a 0-2 Savage Storm advantage, but ECU quickly gained a 6-3 lead and held on for the set. Southeastern battled back within one point (10-9), but the Lady Tigers used a 9-2 run to take control of the set. ECU kept pushing and took the final set 25-17.

The Lady Tigers earned key advantages across the box score, with the biggest advantages coming in hitting percentage and blocks. ECU hit .264 (36k-8e-106ta) to .018 (27k-25e-110ta) by the Savage Storm. Part of the low hitting percentage for Southeastern was the fact that the Lady Tigers tallied 10 (2-16) team blocks to just one (0-2) by the Savage Storm.

ECU will now have the weekend off before their next match, Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Southwestern Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. Tuesday’s match will be the lone match for the Lady Tigers next week before returning home to host the final two GAC matches of the season against Ouachita Baptist (Nov. 9) and Southern Nazarene (Nov. 14).
