The East Central University women’s golf team will open the Spring schedule at the Lady Rattler Round-Up hosted by St. Mary’s (Texas) at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
The tournament will consist of a practice round, Sunday, Feb. 17 and two rounds of play Feb. 18-19. Monday’s tee times start at 9 a.m., with Tuesday’s round starting at 8:30 a.m. The 2013 tournament marks the seventh season that St. Mary’s has hosted the tournament, with the first five years being called the Lady Rattler Hill Country Classic.
The Lady Tigers will be one of 15 teams participating in the tournament, but the only team from the Great American Conference. ECU will compete against six teams from the Lone Star Conference, five from the Heartland Conference and one each from the Pacific West Conference, Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how we compare to the other teams,” said head coach Danny Key. “We’ve had good weather to practice the past month and I feel our teams are in better form than previous years for our first event of the spring season.”
The Lady Tigers will bring five student-athletes to compete at St. Mary’s, with two seniors, two sophomores and a freshman making up the group. Senior Ashley Cardwell was the top player during the Fall schedule, with a 81.1 average in four events. Senior Emily Wharton finished the Fall with an 82 average in four events.
Sophomores Lindsey Lunceford and Shay Shaw will also be making the trip. Lunceford played in four events in the Fall and ended with an 82.5 average. Shaw played in two tournaments and had an 86.25 average.
The final member of the group is freshman Megan Gowens, who was fourth on the team in the Fall with an 82.75 average in four events.
