AC Volleyball survives region opener

11-9-07 - No. 6-seeded Texas Lutheran University gave No. 3 Austin College all they could handle, but the ’Roos held off the Bulldogs in an epic 3-2 win in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Volleyball South Regional Championship.

After falling 31-33 in the first game, the ’Roos took games two and three by scores of 30-28 and 30-25, and after getting within game point of closing out the Bulldogs, TLU stormed back to take a 33-31 victory to force game five. Austin College managed to outlast the Bulldogs 15-13 in the decisive game.

Kaitlin Listol had a match-high 26 kills and added 24 digs to lead the way for the ’Roos, and Jessica Rose added 15 kills and 16 digs. Jenna Wilson had 16 kills, and Morgan Ballard had 12 kills to go along with eight blocks. Jordan Anderton directed the ’Roo attack with 53 assists. Gloria Carey had a match-high 28 digs in the win.

For Texas Lutheran, Megan Purser had the highest assist total of the first day in the Regional with 74, and Jessica Stetler had a team-best 22 kills. Amber Meeks added 21 kills and 15 digs, and Melissa Mudge had 25 digs in defeat.

Austin College advances to take on No. 2-seed Emory on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The ’Roos will be looking for redemption against the Eagles, who have knocked Austin College out of each of the last two NCAA Tournaments.
