SOSU opens hoops season on the road

11-15-07 - The wait is finally over, as the Southeastern Oklahoma State men's basketball team will take to the court on Friday at 6 p.m. against Mid-America Christian at the Oklahoma Christian Classic in Edmond, Okla.

With a trip to the NCAA Division II "Sweet Sixteen" in the rear view mirror, the road ahead for the 2007-08 Storm will look decidedly different with the departure of four starters from last year's squad that went 27-5.

While All-American Eric Babers, along with fellow starters Jason Stampley, Steve Harrel and Matt White have all moved on, the Storm will be looking to reload rather than rebuild.

With six new faces, and nine players that are sophomores or younger SOSU Head Coach Tony Robinson has plenty of young and talented players to mold.

But, just because there are so many new players, does not mean that there will be a la ck of upper classman leadership.

Southeastern sports three seniors in Kyric Rambo, Ryan Woolsey and Kyle Phifer.

Rambo is the team's top returning scorer, while Woolsey is the top returning rebounder.

"We're excited to get the season started," said Robinson, "The guys are ready to get out and face some competition."

The season-opening opponent for SOSU is Mid-America Christian from Oklahoma City, Okla. The Evangels enter the weekend with a 3-1 record, sporting wins over Southwestern (Kan.) and Bethany (Kan.).

MACU is led by Joe Brown, a forward, who is averaging 15.3 points per game. Donald Thorne works the glass for the Evangels, pulling down 6.3 rebounds per outing.

Following Friday's matchup, the Storm will face the host Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 8 p.m.

The Eagles are 2-2 entering the weekend, and will face Texas College on Friday night.

OC is led by Jason Taylor who is averaging 18.5 points per contest, while also leading the squad in rebounds with 9.0 per game.
